Normally, we don’t associate the words ‘excitement’ and ‘sleep’. But sleep dentistry is definitely something to get excited about! For those of you with an extreme fear for dentists fear no longer! Stop putting off that much-needed dentist appointment because you’ve been too scared. With Sleep dentistry, you’ll be in an extremely relaxed state, where the sight, sounds, smells, and discomfort some of us can experience at the dentist all drift away. During sleep dentistry, you maintain consciousness, and you are perfectly cooperative and can respond. Once you wake, you feel very well rested, and have no memory of being at the dentist at all. What better way to wake up than with a whole new smile!
Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer
IV Sedation Dentistry
IV Sedation is also known as Conscious Sedation and is only used by Oral Surgeons and dentists with special advanced training and special certification by the state dental board. With this type of sedation, medications are administered directly into the blood stream. The advantage of IV Sedation is that if someone is not sedated enough, we can administer more medication and the effects are instantaneous. IV Sedation is not used in most dental offices because of the specialized advanced training required and the requirements for certification by the State Board of Dentistry. Only the most diligent patient centric dentists use this technique.
The drugs used for IV Sedation are more effective than the same drugs taken orally. There is a more profound loss of memory associated with this technique. You will not remember the procedure at all. Our staffs have the necessary specialized training, experience and certification to administer IV Sedation. Not only is the doctor trained in the technique, we have invested in getting our assistants trained as well. This makes sure there is more than one person trained to monitor the patient. For patients who are fearful of dental visits, or are afraid due to the extensive treatment needed, or for disabled patients with Down’s syndrome, Parkinsons disease or Alzheimers patients, this is a proposition where they just can’t lose. IV Sedation can help anyone with the deep rooted fear of visiting the dental office. We guarantee that you will love it!
Oral Conscious Sedation
It’s called conscious because you are still awake and know where you are, but you are so relaxed that you don’t care where you are. Oral sedation is administered in the form of a pill or liquid. One of the pills that could be used is Halcion (also known as triazolam), another is Midazolam. They are both very closely related to Valium chemically. The differences are that with Halcion and Midazolam there is a much deeper relaxation and amnesia effect than there is with basic Valium.
Nitrous Oxide sedation – Laugh away your fears.
Nitrous Oxide, which most common folk know as laughing gas, is a pain relieving and sedating gas that is combined with oxygen to make all fearful patients more comfortable during dental care. A minor tingly feeling as well as an altered sense of time is felt by most patients. Our patients are usually listening to relaxing music during nitrous oxide sedation. In general, patients who have had traumatic dental experiences that have left a bad memory will be more comfortable and are able to comfortably get the treatment they need without getting stressed about it. What better way to wake up than with a whole new smile!
